A tabbed notebook is bought to impose an order on how something gets written down: one section per site, per subject, per week, per job. It only works if the sections are the right length, so we ask before we set them rather than splitting the book into equal quarters.

The tabs themselves are board, laminated at the edge where a thumb lands, and punched in the same pass as the text block. Tabs punched separately drift by a millimetre or two and then bind against the coil, which is what makes cheap tabbed books hard to turn.

Tab positions can be stepped down the edge so every tab is visible with the book closed, or aligned in banks where a section repeats. Both are free at artwork stage and neither is possible after the punch.
